Experiment 3: place an egg in a glass and add tap water. The egg should remain at the bottom. (if it floats, it is bad. Try another!) Remove the egg, add salt to the water, and stir until you have a strong salt solution. You will find that the egg floats. Object float when they are less dense (that is, have a lower specific gravity) than the liquid in which they are placed. A strong salt solution therefore has a greater density than an egg, and an egg has a greater density than tap water. If you are very careful, you can adjust the strength of the solution until it has exactly the same density as the egg. The egg can then be placed anywhere beneath the surface, neither floating nor sinking. Compiled by Odeh Ngbede for Ngbes facts .
